( MINGLE - WEEK 3 )

SURVIVORS: 36 The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors. The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel. And speaking of the motel, it doesn't seem like there's anything out of the ordinary on this lovely Monday morning. How quaint. As a reminder, we are now accepting murder proposals for Week 3! If you're interested in having your character commit a murder this week, be sure to send in your proposal before Tuesday, 9:00 PM EST. [dipper's been avoiding people because paranoia week is absolutely not for a kid who's already on the fence of cautious vs paranoid on a normal day, but he can't say no to the word mystery. it's in his blood. also jake only has one leg dipper can outrun him

which is why he joins jake. he even tries to smile. It... doesn't look great, but listen, he's not going to complain to the guy who lost his leg???]

[Oh my god Dipper. Like, fair. But also rude? Not that Jake minds. His paranoia just means he's more likely to hole up and run but since he can't physically do that, he's trying to force himself to interact with people.]

Oh, yep! I've put other such puzzles on the backburner. Better to focus on the life-threatening mysteries, I think. I'm just trying to work out some of the roles.

[listen, at least dipper's expression turns to a more genuine curious and somewhat eager one when Jake explains]

Oh! I've been working on that too. What've you got so far?

Well! Right now I'm pondering over some of the Item Roles. Some of them sound indistinguishable from Weapon Roles, like the Fashionista, but they're labelled differently, so that implies a different purpose. And that makes me think they solve some sort of riddle or puzzle that benefits them.

That's what I've been thinking too! [okay, NOW he's eager] If a straight razor isn't a weapon, what purpose does it serve? Some of these are really weird, too. Like ... what could you use a toilet plunger for?

[potentite]

Right! There must be something that we're missing. A plunger causes a vacuum when used properly. I'm not sure how that could help, though.

Maybe it's in the title? A janitor cleans, so maybe they can... clean something? [a beat] Maybe whoever that is should've gone in the sewer instead.

[that's. probably 2 soon, Dipper.]

[He's a Homestuck it's never too soon.] Maybe? I'm not sure that the titles hold much more meaning than a joke about the item or skill, though. Judging by poor Akane, for example, the Teacher and the GPA aren't really either of those things.

[he nods in acknowledgement]

Good point. We still don't even know what Vincent's notebook did, either. Maybe if we did, we could have some idea on the more obscure items on the list.

[potentite]

I had assumed maybe it allowed you to write details that no one else could see, but... I also had the thought maybe it was a full notebook, already brimming with information for only his eyes. I wonder if Craftly would answer specifics about roles that have been, um, eliminated.

[pinesfortruth]

Maybe. He wasn't super open about it for Jason, but also I just don't like the guy. He drives me bonkers. [he literally sticks out his tongue in a "bleh" thing]

We already had the invisible ink for secret writing, though, so I think your second idea is more likely. Wish I could see that notebook.

[potentite]

Me too. It could have been quite the help. [But he doubts they would be given access to the notebook now, so.] The other that's got me curious, um, despite what I just said about titles is... the Soldier? All of them make sense with their item or skill in some way but... what does a soldier have to do with an obsidian statue?

[pinesfortruth]

Well... we don't know what the statue is, right? Maybe it's a statue that relates to soldiers or war or something? Though I don't know if it being obsidian has any important meaning. [sighs] This place never fails to make me wish we had access to the Internet right now.

[potentite]

Me too! What I wouldn't give for google and wikipedia right now. Picking my brain for vague memories of things I maybe read or heard about once really doesn't cut it.

[pinesfortruth]

We don't even have books! [throws his arms up in the air] Everything is supposed to be completely off the top of our heads, and half the people here don't even know how electricity works. It's a mess.

[potentite]

We can request books but I have a hunch anything that would be of use to us will mysteriously be unavailable.

[pinesfortruth]

We can request stuff so long as it doesn't give an "advantage". Like being able to look things up would be an advantage. [POUTS]

[potentite]

I've been trying to think of things that wouldn't seem to give an advantage that could but coming up blank. Nothing dangerous, mind you, just perhaps to build old-fashioned alarm systems and so forth, things that might prevent murders or at least make them more difficult to pull off without letting us all know.

[pinesfortruth]

Considering there's some kind of freaky magic involved in making sure the murders go without a hitch, I don't think that'd work out. Personally I think that's just cheating.

[potentite]

It really is. I asked Craftly, too, if the survivors will receive anything for the trouble they were put through and he said it would be worth its weight in gold. After hearing about that bible of worship, I wonder if that was literal? But that doesn't seem worth it to me one bit.

[pinesfortruth]

Seriously? A pile of gold? If we really needed money that badly we could've just robbed a bank or made it ourselves! They're both a way easier alternative than all of this?

[potentite]

It may just be a saying, I mean, it is a saying, so I'm not sure if he meant it literally or not but... it's hard to imagine what could possibly be worth all this.

[pinesfortruth]

If it's not literal, it'd have to be something everyone left would find valuable. With the different kinds of people here, it's hard to think what that would even be.

[potentite]

The only thing that could be remotely worth it, to me, is if we could reverse it at the end and bring everyone back but... [They still??? Would have been murdered???]

[pinesfortruth]

But that just means instead of physical torture and murder, it's strictly psychological torture. Which isn't... great.
