( MINGLE - WEEK 4 )
![]() The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors. The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel. And speaking of the buildings surrounding the motel, it seems like the Library is now open. How quaint. As a reminder, we are now accepting murder proposals for Week 4! If you're interested in having your character commit a murder this week, be sure to send in your proposal before Tuesday, 9:00 PM EST. Remember that we can't have a murdergame without any murders, so go forth and let the bodies hit the floor. As always, feel free to PM us or send us a PP over plurk if you have any questions! ic rulebook | locations | statuses | room assignments private conversations | ic profiles | graveyard | full navigation |

[Light is setting up what appears to be a card game on a table before him. They’re basically Magic the Gathering cards, but since they were granted to him so generously by this place, the art on them is laughable at best. They mostly seem to consist of little troll people and clerics, because that’s exceedingly helpful.
He looks up at whomever approaches, and says rather blandly:]
Want to play? I don’t exactly know how, but we can make something up.
[(Distract him from the very disturbing oddities appearing on his arm… something that looks an awful lot like sharpened teeth in a messy row. He’s distinctly wearing long sleeves to ignore it, because it’s just a trick of the mind. It’s just a trick of the mind, it must be.)]
wednesday afternoon, library
[First thing's first, the dead monster here smells. Light grimaces, bringing up a hand to cover his mouth and nose as he looks at the dead, headless thing. Ugh.
(The (perceived) teeth on his left forearm hurts now, they gnash in his flesh, each movement excruciating when it happens. Thankfully they’re rather still… for now.)
As a result, his voice is a little muffled, a little strained.]
My question is… what was strong enough to take off its head?
wildcard
[As usual, feel free to hit me up at
tuesday morning, lounge;
... Perhaps. We can conjure up some sort of involved strategy game, that has some sort of story concerning the pictures on the cards?
no subject
That sounds fine to me. Actually, there already seem to be a set of rules, maybe we can figure out what they are by looking more closely at the cards themselves. Or... well, maybe it will be more fun to just make something up.
[He slides over some kind of... healer?? card. The art shows a woman whose hands appear to be...glowing, he thinks, with magic. It's hard to tell. This is some real bad art.]
"She will not touch a weapon, but she is the greatest protector her people have known."
[-reading off the flavor text, he scoffs.]
Doesn't look quite as impressive as they'd have us believe.
no subject
Then, we may as well see what will work.
[ He picks up a card...it looked like something. An animal of some kind.
He'll put the card, face up. It was supposedly some kind of Sphinx. ]
Well, no. I suppose that may be the fault of whomever was commissioned to draw the art. They should have enlisted the skills of someone who was more talented...

It's a joke, really. This place has a twisted sense of humor.
[He puts down another card, shrugging partly.
worst dramatic card players ever]This one looks like... a mage or something. A wizard?
no subject
That it does...I am reminded of when they saw fit to bring everyone ice cream and such things right after an execution.
[ He's not going to forget, and he hopes no one will either. ]
It does? Is there a description for the card?
no subject
[He frowns at the memory.
Instead, how about focusing on the card? He taps at it.]
It says "Brimstone Mage". I think that's supposed to be fire around his hands.

tuesday!
[Yukina peers at the art as she takes a seat across from him, then fishes a deck of cards out from the pocket of the hoodie she's wearing. They're Pokemon cards... although the art style on hers is just as bad as the style on his.]
Are there any clues about how your cards are supposed to work?
[Either she sees nothing under his sleeve, or she's doing a wonderful job pretending so.]
no subject
Well, that one's a creature card, apparently. That much is written on it; I think I use these to attack my opponent.
[He reaches across the table, palm upwards, wanting to see one of her cards.] May I look at one of yours?
[If she's ignoring his arm, that's a good sign, right? It means that this is all a farce, an illusion, and that strange feeling of movement along his skin and muscle is just... in his head, it has to be. ...Or maybe she can't see it because of his sleeve?]
no subject
[She hands the first card from the top of her deck over to him - the name at the top says "Glaceon," but the image leaves quite a bit to be desired - it's nowhere near as polished as it ought to be.
She takes the creature card he offers her and examines it closely.]
I think that makes sense... it looks like it's meant to be holding a weapon of some kind.
no subject
Ice Shot and Icy Wind. Looks like we'll need a coin if we want to pl-
[He's cut off, though, by the feeling of movement on his arm again. Teeth gnashing, grinding, erupting from his own flesh--
Light drops the card on the table, his other hand coming to wrap around his forearm, pressing down with a force that's painful. His teeth are grit.]
D-dammit...
no subject
[She gasps and leans forward, abandoning the card in order to reach for his arm. He's holding it before she can get close, though, and her hands go still in the air, her eyes wide.]
What's wrong...?

Feel free to sit, then.
What kind of games have you been learning?
no subject
[ she takes a seat! ]
no subject
[Well, for you maybe, Light.
He cuts the deck of cards in half and offers them to her.]
Want to take a look at these? I'm sorry to say they're not all that... impressive.
no subject
Still, she takes the cards and starts looking them over. And with utmost sincerity: ] These are great. I like them.

Tsurugi has been curiously inspecting it as close as possible, covering his nose as well because it is pretty smelly... Well, it's just gross in general.
Every now and then tries to wipe things off his arms out of paranoia due to the strange things that appear on it? Geeeez. ]
Hmm, I guess the first question is whether a person did it or another monster. Either way, they did a good job.
no subject
Light's brows furrow. He's not sure how much he trusts Tsurugi after the suspicions surrounding him the trial before last... But. He can at least entertain an idle conversation with him.
Hand still up to his nose and mouth, though, Light doesn't move closer to the monster corpse. He stays planted where he is, brow furrowed, nothing him ocassionally wiping at his arm. (Light's pointedly trying to ignore his own.)]
You think another person would have the strength to do this?
no subject
Also look, trust him. Tsurugi is a good boy. He's just a guy, trying to have a good time. ]
Hmm, I mean it's possible! I've met a lot of people who hunt things such as... Monsters. I guess who did it isn't my real concern, just the fact they didn't clean up their mess, really.
no subject
Monster hunting... [Light actually has to scoff at that... still from behind his hand. Ugh.] Sometimes I forget that the people here come from wildly different backgrounds. Monster hunting, where I'm from, just sounds like something that'd take place in a video game.
If the mess bothers you that much, you could always clean it up.
tuesday - evidently i like suffering
There's something akin to almost genuine emotion on his face when he pulls out his own deck and shuffles it quickly before setting it back down on the table. ]
If you don't mind playing by Duel Monsters rulesets - the cards seem... similar enough that the ruleset should be applicable, regardless.
[ That thing about mana and lands and stuff... yeah... maybe he's going to fudge it up a bit but THEY'LL MAKE IT WORK, OK. ]
i don't understand why you hate yourself so much??
At least this will be a nice distraction from his arm.]
You'll have to explain to me how the game works. But... [He's going to offer his own deck to Kaiba to look at, because he honestly has no clue which cards will work and which won't.]
Take a look. Pick out which ones you think will work -- or will all of them suffice?
self-loathing is canon apparently
He's going to at least do a cursory count through the cards though - his deck has about 20 odd cards less than Light's because Duel Monsters rules. ]
You won't need the land cards, I think. Instead of using... mana, to activate attacks and spells, for simplicity's sake, we'll just use the lowest levelled effect of whatever cards we draw. Most of my cards only have single effects.
[ Multiple tiered effects, though, hm. Something to bring back, eventually. ]
Speed Duel rules - we start with 4,000 Life Points, first person to deplete the other's Life wins the Duel. Maximum of four monsters and magic or traps each on your field at any point in time.
[ He's starting to settle into his element. He draws the first five cards from his deck, fanning them out so that Light can see the number of cards that he's drawn. He has a feeling that the other will pick up the game rather easily. ]
Do you want to attack first?
rip both of us
Light's eyes scan his cards, then flicker back up to Kaiba. He's right, it won't take long for him to pick up the rules of the game but-- Well, he's not so foolish to think that he's not at a disadvantage. Kaiba apparently takes this Very Seriously, and Light is still considered a beginner. With cards that aren't even the correct ones, at that.
He frowns. He hates being at a disadvantage.]
I will. For the sake of an example.
[And down comes a card, except with much shittier art.] How much damage will this do? We're ignoring the skills, I assume.
