SURVIVORS: 40

The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors.

The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel.

And speaking of the motel, it seems like the Storage room has unlocked itself overnight. How quaint.

I had the same dadgum problem the day we arrived. It's still got most of the blood on it.

Dadgum is, um... a minced oath? But oh! Well, gosh, sorry for being overly cautious there for a moment. Just with all the hullabaloo about murder, I worried.

["dadgum" and "hullabloo" have been added to Yukina's vocabulary. This is Jake's legacy. She will use them in a trial in his memory.]

Oh, no, it's all right... thank you for being worried. [She smiles. It's nice that his first thought "were you hurt" and not "did you stab someone".] That's a normal concern to have around here, I think.

Unfortunate but true, yes. Still, I'm glad to know you're in good order. [Even if he doesn't know her, though he's seen her around, he doesn't want anyone here hurt. He frowns at the kimono.] Though I'm a lost ball in the weeds when it comes to laundry, sorry. Maybe try cold water? That's quite a lovely looking garment, too.

[Cold water it is. She'll grab another laundry bin to fill, and while the water's running, she looks back to Jake with a smile.]

Thank you for the suggestion. [HOPEFULLY IT WILL WORK.] And I'm glad to hear you think so. With any luck, it will be as good as new once we're done here. [Then she pauses.] ...what brings you here, by the way? Did you have something you need washed?

Oh! Well, um. [He looks aside, clearing his throat in embarrassment.] I've never... used anything to clean my clothing! So I thought, well, since they've got all the bells and whistles like, uh, detergent, I should probably brush up on how those things work.

Oh, gosh, I wouldn't want to trouble you when you're already squared away trying to work out that stain. And it must sound awfully silly to have to explain such basic concepts.

Not at all. [To... both of those things, really.] It's no trouble, and whether a task is basic or not, if it's your first time, you'll still need to be told how to do it, yes? That's just a part of learning.

You'll need two tubs. One to use the detergent in, and one to rinse the detergent out of after. [She indicates the ones she's working with.] Usually, the one you're using the detergent in will be warmer, but there are some things that wash better with cold water... you can use a washboard to help with the scrubbing, or to get the water out of clothes before you hang them up to dry.
