( MINGLE - WEEK 4 )

The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors.

The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel.

And speaking of the buildings surrounding the motel, it seems like the Library is now open. How quaint.

As a reminder, we are now accepting murder proposals for Week 4! If you're interested in having your character commit a murder this week, be sure to send in your proposal before Tuesday, 9:00 PM EST. Remember that we can't have a murdergame without any murders, so go forth and let the bodies hit the floor.

... Oooor I could ask the Faceless Men since cleaning the motel is, like. Their job and everything.

If you're going to ask them, you might as well ask me. It might be their job, but they're terrible at it. There are so many little details they miss, plus I'd never trust them to wash my clothes or cook for me.

I thought you might be the same, honestly. I mean, you have no idea what they put in the food or how they clean things...

Cleanliness is kinda not a priority for me. [he is a twelve year old boy and it shows in these specific ways.] The food I can totally get behind on. I'm still about 75% sure there's some crushed body parts in there. But also I need to eat to live and I can't cook, so. Willful denial it is.

... what have you been doing since you got here? Have you been bathing? Doing your laundry? What exactly do you mean by not a priority?

[Her brow furrows as she's reminded of how some of the pirates could get when it came to cleanliness. At least Phi isn't that frustrating.]

Craftly said he could arrange cooking lessons. And I've been making meals three times a day since we got here. I don't plan on cooking for everyone here, but there's usually leftovers.

[in an offended tone:]

I shower!

[there is no word on the laundry thing]

I'd rather die than trust Craftly to teach me how to cook.

Good. Otherwise I'd kill you.

[Don't let her know about the laundry, just let her believe he washes a huge load every single week...]

I don't know if he'd be the one teaching. It might be one of the faceless daemons.

[he gestures at her at that] See, that? That kind of thing? That is why we don't talk.

[and then he makes a face]

Wow. That's even worse.

Do you really think I'd kill someone over something like that? If I did, quite a few of my allies would be dead and then there'd be no one capable of sailing a ship.

[She'll joke about killing, but she will not joke about cleaning things. That's very important.]

Yeah, I can't imagine how they're able to cook without a face. I can do it without taste, but that's a little different.

I don't know you, and we're in a murder hotel, so... Yes. I can absolutely believe that.

[he's paranoid and doesn't trust easy sry velvet. tho that grabbed his attention--]

Wait, you can't taste? Like, at all? Is it a condition or were you born like that?

Not since I became a daemon. The only thing I'm able to taste is blood. But I can taste everything here fine so my cooking's probably a little better.

[wow. he immediately regrets asking]

Just... blood??? [what's this. it's a discrete step backwards] Is a daemon a subsection of a vampire?

[dO YOU EAT PEOPLE]

No. And not every daemon is like me, you know. All the others I know are able to taste things just fine.

[dipper's trying to decide if his curiosity beats out his natural wariness of anyone joking about murder. curiosity wins:]

Alright, I'll bite. What exactly is a daemon?

A daemon is a human that's been taken over by malevolence. That's all. Every human has the capability to become a daemon.

Huh. And what's malevolence?

The evil that lives in everyone's hearts. You've had a selfish thought before, I'm sure. Everyone has. Humans produce malevolence unknowingly, and when it's not kept in check... you get the idea, right?

So malevolence is... kinda like negative feelings? And when you have too much of it you become a daemon. [he takes that in] What does being a daemon do?

It depends. Most people lose their entire sense of self. They become mindless monsters and that's what people tend to think of as daemons. Of course, I look like this... There's another daemon I know whose face has been scarred by malevolence, and another who's a lizard man. We're stronger than humans, and you'd have to be an exorcist if you hope to defeat a daemon. Why do you care?

I'm interested in the supernatural and all things "weird". It's kind of my thing. [shrugs] Learning the differences between what's the norm in different dimensions is probably one of the only good things about this place.

Weird...? Everyone keeps saying stuff like that about my world, but it's simply how things are. I have no idea what your worlds are like, but I know that one has something called a washing machine... Are you from a world like that? Is that why you splashed the water?

Washing machines are a thing, but no, that is not why I splashed the water. Why are you not over that yet. Maybe I just like splashing water around. For fun.

[it's more believable when he sounds exasperated about it]

Because I know what kids do for fun and it's not splashing soapy water. That and it's still a waste.

It could be if it was in balloons. Or a bath. [but she's. got a point.] The water wasn't soapy enough and I was telling it off. Yep. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

You're terrible at lying, you know. If that was your story, you would've said so.

What are you gonna do, kill me to find out the truth? [...] Please don't do that.
