SURVIVORS: 40

The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors.

The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel.

And speaking of the motel, it seems like the Storage room has unlocked itself overnight. How quaint.

Who needs ears anyway?

Huh? You've never used one? I mean, I guess most people probably haven't.. [ it was a skill she didn't necessarily like having. ] I can show you if you want. It's not that hard. And.. I hate them, but a gun has done more for me than most people I've ever met.

If you've got the time. Better than listening to the voices.

[which is sort of making the attempts to be nice. but also, she's honestly curious. so that thing is called a "gun"...

why this one hates them, she doesn't ask. some people couldn't get over tools for violence.]

Here, watch. You gotta make sure you steady yourself and use both hands, or it'll mess up your shoulder.

[ she's planting two feet firmly on the ground and spreading them just a bit, then raises the gun with two hands to about eye level. ]

Guns have a little thing on the side to prevent you from, like, shooting your foot off, so make sure you disable that. It's called the safety. After you do that and you're ready, just pull the trigger. It's always.. a little scary to pull it, so you can't hesitate or your finger will hover there and never pull it, then you're dead.

[she watches Heather closely, nodding at each instruction to show she's listening.]

And just like that, you can take something down? Wow...

[the look on her face is a little contemplative, easy enough to mistake for hesitation in the face of gunfire. in truth, she still thinks claws and knives have their merits, but this seemed...quick. for when things like speed were above all else crucial.]

I see how practice would keep the voices at bay, though. Thinking about anything but whatever they're saying, even if it's something like this. [beat.] Are they always so loud?
