( MINGLE - WEEK 2 )

SURVIVORS: 40

The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors.

The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel.

And speaking of the motel, it seems like the Storage room has unlocked itself overnight. How quaint.

Welcome to Week 2's mingle, everyone! As of this week, we are now accepting murder proposals. If you're interested in having your character murder someone this week, please send in your proposal before Tuesday, 9:00 PM EST. We'll be contacting you on plurk over the week to finalize the details, or ask for rescheduling if necessary.

As always, feel free to PM us or send us a PP over plurk if you have any questions!

How cheery.

[Lovecraft is an author Apollo has now determined he'll never read. He cringes, a sudden burst of regret passing through his head. Augh...]

No wonder Craftly was so sure there'd be a murder every week. This kind of incentive is almost infallible!

[Light casts his gaze off to the side, considering.]

The incentive for it to stop, you mean? You have more faith in the people around you than I if you believe that's the only reason why someone would commit murder.

[But, ah, he has a feeling that's not exactly what Apollo may have meant anyway, so have a lazy shrug of his shoulders.]

What are yours saying? The whispering voices.

I know people have a lot of reasons to kill, but here there aren't that many. There's no money, there's no reason to kill anyone as a revenge -- yet -- and there's no power to be held. Craftly wouldn't let anyone have control over anything if it isn't for murder.

[At least those are all the motivations he has seen to kill someone in the cases he has worked in. Surely there are more complicated motives to kill someone]

...mine are about betraying people, not having believed in them enough. Twice, in fact, one being my former boss and another being an associate I work with. It'd end with them getting sentenced to death penalty. The accusations I built against them were quite severe, after all.

It's not too different from what's going on here, now that I think about it...condemning people to death penalty for murdering someone.

[Apparently the whispers of regret don't care that one of those two times going against his former boss was the right thing to do. Not believing in Athena enough is the one that hurts him more, even if in the end her innocence was proven.

There's also another regret that hits him hard, but he's keeping that one unsaid. He doesn't know Light at all, after all]

[He listens intently as Apollo speaks, deigning not to interrupt until he's done.]

You mean there aren't reasons that we're aware of. The will to survive is often motive enough -- and who knows what alliances have been formed under our noses? Even this early on, I wouldn't be surprised if they've already happened. Some people might take on the mindset of "kill them before they kill me".

[Which is not comforting, but it's something they all need to consider.]

I see. ...Mine are about the results of the last trial. And what I was expected to do... [He's trailing off. He doesn't need to go into the details of the execution again.]

What is it you do? [He has an idea, what with the wording of "the accusations I built against them".]

There's nothing you could do. If you hadn't plunged Hana into the lake both you and and her would have died.

[It's an empty platitude, but yeah]

I'm a defense attorney.

[...well better explain that part a bit better, because defense lawyers usually don't tend to accuse the witnesses]

For some reason almost all the cases I have worked in required me to defend my clients by finding the real culprit of the murders they were accused of. Just one case ended with a not-guilty verdict without someone else being indicted.

[An empty platitude, but Light just looks vaguely appreciative of it on the outside.]

...Thank you.

[A defense attorney, though? Interesting.]

Odd that it would end up that way for you. It sounds like you also play the part of detective, too.

I have to. I'm no detective, but more often than not I have to check the crime scenes and bring evidence to trials.

[The detective force in his world is largely incompetent except by a few people, unfortunately]

I'm better at court than at investigating...except in situations like this one. I don't think what I'm used to will be of help here. I can't work with forty suspects at once.
godly: (but you're saying it's not enough)

[personal profile] godly 2017-05-30 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Light seems to straighten a bit in interest.]

Even so... your experience with detective work and investigating crimes scenes... That will be very beneficial here. We need minds like that who are willing to put their heads together the next time a trial comes up.

Forty suspects will seem less daunting then. And I'm always willing to help.

I'll see what I can do to help.

[That may not have sounded determined, but Apollo does want to help. He's just a bit unsure on how much help he can give in this situation]

Does your interest in criminal justice extend to investigations too? Should I expect you to lend a hand in the crime scenes themselves?

[He's very aware Light has 'murder' as a talent, as much as he doesn't like to think of having to rely on that, if Light is so good at that he may have points of view other people wouldn't, or at least that's what Apollo hopes]
godly: (rose-colored lenses)

[personal profile] godly 2017-05-31 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. I'm not a detective officially, but I've had a hand or two in an investigation back home. There's no point in me not utilizing these skills here, as well, if necessary.

And sorry as I am to say it, they will be necessary.

[All this also implies that Apollo has read his card, and is probably purposefully not mentioning the "murder" bit. That's fine by Light -- the less he has to repeat himself regarding that, the better.]
