SURVIVORS: 40

The sun is shining, the air conditioner units hum as they always do, and a gentle morning breeze blows against the windows. The scent of pine cones and evergreen follow you wherever you go in the motel, save for the parking lot and outdoor pool. It seems like someone was very generous with the detergent while moping the floors.

The two grandfather clocks (one on each floor) will ring with each passing hour, indicating the time of day without fail. With this knowledge — they'll note the motel will continue to be surrounded by fog until 8:00 AM on the dot. It is at that hour that the fog will begin to recede. Not enough to reveal the whole city, but enough to allow residents to explore some of the buildings surrounding the motel.

And speaking of the motel, it seems like the Storage room has unlocked itself overnight. How quaint.

That's funny. I have this thing where if someone is good at the same thing as I am, I like to find out who's better.

[THROWS THE PENCIL WELL ABOVE JAY'S HEAD]

[can you catch it from way up there, buddy]

[ jay blinks, then turns around as he watches it soar... above him... you dick

the pause is a short one though before he is literally running after it. there's a chair in his way, but instead of moving past it, jay jumps on top of it, and uses the momentum to leap into the air after the pencil so he can grab it in his hand. he lands neatly on the ground, although the chair topples over.

he turns around to face kaito, and waves. i'm sorry jay is also a showoff. ]

[low, impressed whistle]

[takes a few steps back, adjusting his stance]

All right.

Give me your best shot.

[HE CAN DO BETTER, BRO]

Catch, Kaito.

[ he throws it, but this throw is aimed lower, which means that kaito will have a much shorter window to catch it before it hits the ground. ]

[immediately dives forward, sliding against the ground like a baseball player trying to catch a pop fly. he manages to snag the pen in the tips of his fingers before it falls, and once he has it, he rolls onto his side and pops back up onto his feet in a ~dramatic~ flourish which ends with a bow]

[ jay claps politely. ]

You would be good at sports, I think.

Would be? I am good at sports.

[his canon literally says he is good at all sports?? why is he like this]

A showoff and very cocky. That's a terrible combination.

[ JAY YOU ARE BOTH OF THOSE THINGS ]

Y'know, you're one to talk--

[THINK FAST JAY]

[he's chucking the pencil towards the air at his side as fast as he can. LIKE A FASTBALL PITCH]

[ i really hope whoever's the ghost sees this and kills them both tbh

but jay actually laughs at that because this is? very hilarious?? and it's nice to do something dumb when everything else is terrible.

he grabs the pencil by the eraser. it actually almost falls out of his grasp at the last second, but he tightens his hold on it because he refuses to lose. ]

[PUT THEM OUT OF THEIR MISERY]

[takes a few steps back, brows raised, as though challenging Jay again. HE CAN DO THIS ALL MORNING]

[ jay nods his head, and goes to throw it

and instead throws it with all of his strength over his own shoulder

[bolts as fast as his feet will carry him towards. . . one of the walls? which he immediately parkours up and vaults off of to launch himself into the air]

[so he can catch the pencil]

[he lands in a tuck and roll, popping back up onto his feet in seconds]

Cheap.

My, what quick reflexes! I didn't think you were going to make it that time.

[ he sounds like he's trying not to laugh, i'm sorry. ]

[waves the pencil in the air with a scoff]

You just don't have faith in my abilities.

[he doesn't throw it again just yet, because he's trying to figure out how to make his next one SUPER EXTRA DIFFICULT]

I'm just waiting for you to finally impress me with them, Kid.

[ he dramatically yawns ]

You can call me Kaito, if you want.

[tosses the pencil into the air and catches it with his other hand]

No point in maintaining the stage name when my real one is already out there.

That must have been a rather rude shock for you when those cards came up, right?

[ jay's glad he didn't use a fake name even though he considered it at first. ]
