Unlike the previous day, those who are asleep past 8:00 AM will experience no pain as they're roused awake. Instead, they're pulled from their sleep peacefully, almost as if enveloped in a mother's loving embrace. A comfortable warmth spreads through their body as they open their eyes, finding themselves free of any grogginess or disorientation. Similarly, those who woke up early or were unable to sleep at all will find themselves alert and ready to take on the day. Considering what is about to transpire, however... no one would be blamed for wishing they could stay asleep. "Good morning. My staff and I hope you were able to sleep well. As promised, an execution will take place on this fine day. Please make your way to the Dining Hall. A member of our distinguished staff will be waiting for you with a summary of last night's results." Just like the previous day, residents who do not make their way to the Dining Hall before 8:15 AM will be forcibly escorted out of their rooms (or wherever else they may be). True to Craftly's words, one of the faceless men will be waiting in the Dining Hall while all the current survivors gather. Once everyone is there, with the exception of Mira, the staff member will slip a transparency into the projector, switching the device on to reveal what appears to be a telegram. [Akane watches, expressionless and unflinching. She wishes Jake didn't have to do this, but right now she won't allow herself to even feel distress for his sake. Even after a night's rest, she's still too full of rage for anything else to matter.]

[he remembers her rage from the day before. remembers the way she had almost taken a chair to Mira's head. quietly, he slides up next to her]

[Her eyes don't leave the stage, but she nods slightly to acknowledge Kaito's presence.]

Yes?

[it'd be a useless platitude to ask her if she's okay. in fact, anything he says right now would be extremely unhelpful. she instead, he just. nods at her in return and stands close, a silent showing of solidarty]

[She remains completely silent and motionless through the execution, showing no reaction to anything that happens. When it's finally over, though, she glances at Kaito for the first time today.]

Are you okay?

[he's shaking. trying to repress it, but failing]

. . . are you sure that's not a question I should be asking you?

I feel sorry for Jake, but beyond that I'm fine.

[why doesn't he believe that?]

. . . she did say we'd be pretty pissed off if we voted for her after all.

[a deep breath, and he closes his eyes. images of Mira's execution play on his eyelids, and he flinches. god. Jake had no idea what he was getting into do when he volunteered. . .]

I hope we made the right choice.

[I don't know, narration. What possible reason is there to think that she might not be perfectly fine?]

We made the only choice available to us. Voting for Craftly would have been too much of a leap in the dark.

Yeah.

Plus, it kinda sounded like she was just trying to save her own skin.

Oh, I don't have any doubt that she fully planned on dying no matter which way the votes fell. That was the whole point of her little game.

[There's a touch of contempt in her voice. Mira's machinations were clever, no doubt about that, but she could never hold a candle to Zero.]

I don't think her own life matters to her all that much more than anyone else's.

It sounded like you knew her, from before you were both brought here.

I did. We were both participants in a simulation of a manned mission to Mars. Of course, at that time I had no idea of her true nature.

[wait, she's an astronaut? but she said she's been in similar-- oh. well, he can ask her about that later]

So this is the first time you're seeing this side of her too, huh. . .

I knew she'd done something terrible before we came here, but I don't know if she understood the repercussions of her actions. Until now I wanted to believe that it was just something like an accident.

[so much for that hope, huh]

After seeing her like this. . . I'm sure that it wasn't.

Well, she claimed not to know anything about it. As monstrous as she is, she doesn't strike me as the type to intentionally do something on that scale.

[There's that contempt again. She doesn't want to give Mira any kind of respect at all.]

Much like here, she was just acting as a pawn for someone much more dangerous.

Something more dangerous?

[it takes him a moment, but--]

"Mother." That's who you're talking about, right?
